See where to stay →From the Taj Mahal at dawn to the backwaters of Kerala: the Golden Triangle, the palaces of Rajasthan, the ghats of Varanasi and the beaches of Goa. We help you choose the right area and the right hotel at every stop, with real reviews and month-by-month prices.
The first trip usually starts with the Golden Triangle: Delhi, the capital; Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal; and Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan, just a few hours apart by train or road. From there you continue to Udaipur, the city of lakes, or to Varanasi, the sacred city on the Ganges. For the coast and the south there are Mumbai, the beaches of Goa and the backwaters and tea plantations of Kerala.
Choosing well where to sleep changes the trip: in Delhi it pays to be near the metro; in Agra, a few steps from a Taj gate so you can get in at dawn; in Jaipur and Udaipur, in a haveli; in Varanasi, close to the river. In each guide we describe the areas honestly and show you hotels with good reviews, real photos and month-by-month prices.

The best time for almost all of India is October to March: dry, mild days in the north (20-33 °C) and beach season in Goa. December and January are the coolest months, with cold nights in the north. From April to June the heat exceeds 40 °C in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Varanasi, and from June to September the monsoon arrives, stronger on the west coast (Mumbai, Goa and Kerala), with the lowest prices of the year.

The usual plan is to fly into Delhi, tour the triangle by train or by car with a driver, and continue on domestic flights to Udaipur, Varanasi, Mumbai, Goa or Kerala; many travelers arrive via Delhi and leave from Mumbai. Arranging the airport transfer before you arrive avoids the most chaotic part of the trip.
Each city has its must-sees: Old Delhi and Humayun’s Tomb, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, Amber Fort and the Palace of the Winds in Jaipur. These are the most booked activities in Delhi:
